New measures for SFI

Mar, 25 2024Key Changes to SFI Actions
Under the new rules, SFI applicants can allocate only 25% of their land to six specific actions that remove land from direct food production. These actions include:
- Flower-rich grass margins
- Pollen and nectar flower mix
- Winter bird food on arable and horticultural land
- Grassy field corners and blocks
- Improved grassland field corners or blocks out of management
- Winter bird food on improved grassland
These actions remain important for sustainable food production. However, they were always intended for smaller areas of a farm, and the new measures will ensure that intention is upheld.
Immediate Implementation
Starting at midnight tonight, these changes take effect. From this point forward, applicants must comply with the new restrictions for the listed actions.
Impact on Farm Businesses
As a result, some businesses will need to rethink their SFI strategy and production plans. Many may have budgeted for large areas under these high-value environmental actions, so this announcement could significantly alter those plans.
Ceres Rural’s Perspective
While this adds to a growing list of SFI policy changes, Ceres Rural supports Defra’s decision. Limiting these areas aligns with our integrated approach to agricultural consultancy, delivering both financial and environmental resilience for food producers and the wider supply chain.
Positive News for Other Options
It is encouraging that Defra has not restricted options such as SAM2, SAM3, and NUM3. These continue to play a vital role in sustainable crop rotations and overall production.
Looking Ahead
Defra intends to announce further measures to protect food security and achieve the 60% self-sufficiency target. We welcome these upcoming changes and look forward to seeing how they support UK farming.
